Housing in the Nation's Capital is recognized for the rigor of its research and the quality of its analysis. Published since 2002, the report offers an in-depth look at current and emerging housing trends in the District of Columbia and the region.
In 2000, the Fannie Mae Foundation convened several meetings of Washington metropolitan area housing experts to discuss the information and research needs in the Washington metropolitan area. Participants expressed a common desire for more accessible, detailed, and complete housing information for the District and the region. To help fill the information gap, the Fannie Mae Foundation engaged the Urban Institute to produce the annual
Housing in the Nation's Capital report.
Each report assembles and analyzes a wide array of demographic, economic, and housing data for the Washington metropolitan area. The immediate objective is to provide policymakers, housing professionals, and the public with a rich, textured portrait of housing conditions in the Washington metropolitan area. The larger goal is to supply the region with a fact-fueled engine that serves to ignite and propel ongoing dialogue on the affordable housing challenges facing the District and the region.
This year's report will focus on the impact of the foreclosure crisis on the region, examining the level and trends of foreclosures, outlining potential secondary effects for families and neighborhoods, and looking towards the future of the region’s housing market.
