This is the report on the first year of the Urban Institute's evaluation of the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds' Community Partnerships for Cultural Participation Initiative. Nine community foundations received funding to work toward "broadening, deepening, and diversifying" participation in arts and culture over five years. We discuss: the framework we are using to understand and evaluate community foundations' performance; the strategies arts and culture providers use to enhance cultural participation; how funders and others within the arts and culture system can support arts and culture providers; and the role of community foundations as intermediaries in local arts and culture systems.
